Did you know that the 3rd of December is International Day for Persons with Disabilities? Well, now you know. It is a Global observance that transcends race, ethnicity, and nationality, promoting inclusivity and equality for all. We believe in a world where disabilities are not barriers, and every person has the chance to live life to the fullest. It is important to know that we all live and are abled differently and must have an opportunity equally and with dignity.
Living with a disability can mean navigating a world that isn’t always designed to be accessible, from social stigma and discrimination, Mental Health and Emotional well-being, Financial and Economic challenges, access to services, limitations in acquiring education, Employment barriers, Lack of access to digital spaces, the list is endless. What may seem like everyday convenience to many of us are for people with disabilities often precious opportunities that open doors to inclusion and independence. True inclusion goes beyond providing access, it means creating an environment where people with disability are accepted for who they are, where their voices are heard, and where they can fully engage in all areas of life, this does not only benefit the disabled but the society at large.
However, despite these challenges, continuous efforts have been made and continue to be implemented to close the gap that fosters a society that fully embraces diversity and inclusion starting with the UN Proclaiming this day back in 1992 also in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disability (CRPD 2006) A land mark international treaty that emphasizes the rights of persons with disability to enjoy all human right and freedoms on an equal basis with others, The universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) highlights how disability rights are tied to human rights, ensuring nondiscrimination and equality.
Change for Planet believes in engaging youths, women and persons abled differently towards the achievement of sustainable development goals. By investing and empowering these demographic groups we wish to build stronger, more resilient societies that leave no one behind. We are committed to achieving this in several ways but not limited to, just to mention but a few;
Education and skill development
Health and wellbeing
Access to resources and rights
Social and cultural empowerment
Economic Empowerment
Each one of us in different capacities can play a role to ensure that those amongst us abled differently can enjoy normal livelihood. Start today by learning about disability issues, supporting inclusive policies, and advocating for accessibility. As we Observe the International Day of Persons with Disabilities let us reaffirm our commitment to building a world everyone regardless of ability has the opportunity to thrive!
